What Kind of Mulch is Best to Use?
As North Texans get ready for a busy summer season of outdoor activities, many clients begin to wonder about finishing out their lawns. A common question we get revolves around the best type of mulch to use.
In this article, Lawn Connections looks at the different types of mulch available to be used in North Texas lawns.
Inorganic Mulch
Many of our clients think of inorganic mulch when they envision “mulch”. Inorganic mulch includes things like:
- plastic
- rocks
- rock chips
- other non-plant materials
For instance, black plastic is the only inorganic mulch used in vegetable gardens. But this isn’t the only kind of mulch on the market.
Organic Mulch
Organic mulch is usually something like straw, compost, newspaper, sawdust, or similar materials. Natural mulch consists of dead leaves, twigs, fallen branches, and other plant debris which accumulate over time. However, North Texans are too busy to let Mother Nature do things this way without a little help from an experienced lawn care company.
Organic mulches not only conserve moisture, but also feed plants, earthworms, and other beneficial lawn life by composting debris back into the ground. So organic mulches have become increasingly popular even among ornamental landscapers.
Why Mulch is Important
The use of mulch is vital in Texas. A mulch layer on the soil surface allows the soil to soak up more water. It also reduces the rate of water loss from the soil. In the summer, proper mulching helps keep the soil cooler.
Mulch beds not only look good but can save the water that our landscapes get from rain or watering. It will also reduce weeds and the Hardwood mulch will improve the soil health when it breaks down. Hardwood is the most widely used; there is also Cedar, Cypress, and the Red & Black Cypress and pine bark to mention the most common
